My cousins Terry and Karen McAfee on the Homer Spit, Alaska July 6, 2022. Their trip to Alaska that summer was the first time I had seen Terry in almost two decades. It was inspiring to meet the kind, intelligent, enthusiastic man he grew into. Though unable to attend the service, I look forward to encountering the people and communities that Terry has had an undoubtedly positive impact on.

I am so sorry to hear of Terry's passing. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting Terry in person but he was a kind soul who helped me feed two feral kitties outside the ALS at LBNL on alternating days after one of our coworkers retired. He had a big heart and I will always remember his gentle, thoughtful personality and love for the kitties. He left us too soon and will be greatly missed! RIP, Terry.

Although briefly, I got to work with Terry a few times at the end of Dec 2021 and the beginning of 2022. He helped us set up equipment for testing at the metrology beam line at the Advance Light Source at LBNL. Physically strong, emotionally calm is how I perceived him. He was very very helpful. I will miss him.

Terry lived in a house behind my garden for multiple years and I got to know him well. I had just been dumped in a really awful way after an 8 year relationship and was pretty broken by it. It happened right around the same time Terry found out about his diagnosis and I was over there a lot trying to distract myself. Terry helped me so much, and talked to me and whenever I felt bad about crying to him about a breakup when he was literally dying. He reassured me that I wasn’t an unlovable, broken person, that it would get better, and that he was happy to have someone else’s problems to help with and think about. I got to know Karen really well too over the years. They both mean so much to me. Terry loved his cat, Little One, so much. He was a genuinely good, kind, caring person who was generous and just wanted the best for people. I will miss him and remember him and keep him in my heart always.

I have had the pleasure of working with Terry quite a bit over the last 6 years. He was a post-doc in our group when I started grad school, and I eventually took over his project when he got the permanent position at Berkeley Labs. Over the past couple of years, Terry and I would have dinner and hang out whenever I traveled down to Berkeley for research, and we always enjoyed our conversations.
Terry was a very influential part of my time in graduate school and I am getting ready to submit another paper for peer-review that Terry did a lot of work for and is an author on. Hard to come to terms with the fact that we will no longer be able to collaborate on any more projects.
Terry, you will be missed man. I will miss hanging out and visiting with you and the scientific community will be worse off without you in it. RIP

My deepest condolences to all of Terry's family and friends. I had not seen Terry since we were kids, but have lots of fond memories of him. One in particular is when we were in the fourth grade, I believe, him and Zach insisted we play tackle football, even though it had been banned in the school. I ran after Terry and knocked him down, causing him to break his collarbone. I felt horrible, I remember him being so tough about it. He didn't even cry as we walked him to the office.. He came back to school, wearing a big brace and all of the kids gave me a hard time for it for a long time. Terry though laughed it off and reassured me that it was ALL of our faults and not just mine. lol He was such a kind soul, and I wish I would have had more contact with him over the years. RIP My old friend.
