Obituary of John Raymond Scribner

John Scribner, died at home Saturday morning August 22, 2020 of a massive heart attack. He was fifty-seven years old. John was born in Berkeley, California July 4, 1963. He is survived by his parents, Penny and Jerry Scribner, his wife, Mary Dentinger, sister, Druscilla Scribner, daughter Sarah Scribner and Sarah’s mother, Rhonda Roman and their respective families. John graduated from Chico State University in Communications in 1995 and stayed in the Chico-Oroville area for the rest of his life. While in college, John, then a divorced single Dad served as the president of the PTA at his daughter’s elementary school. He and Mary married in Chico in 1996 and lived there and in Paradise before moving to Oroville seventeen years ago. Both animal lovers they enjoyed a rural lifestyle on their five-acre horse property where they kept horses, a companion donkey as well as their dogs they took for long daily early morning walks. Mary, an avid horseback rider, was a teacher for thirty-two years before retiring from the Oroville City Elementary School District, this spring. In August they celebrated their 24th anniversary by hiking in Lassen National Park. Both were in excellent health and looking forward to many more years together. A gifted photographer and storyteller, John found his calling as an advertising salesman. Creative, funny, and personable, John loved helping people be successful in their occupations. His sales career took him to New York, Las Vegas, Wisconsin, Reno Nevada, Arizona and dozens of cities and states in between. He also supported the local arts community for many years helping with the advertising for Chico Presents and other organizations. Like Willy Loman in the play, Death of a Salesman, John felt “selling was the greatest career a man would want.” In his leisure time, John enjoyed working outside on the property building improvements and occasionally riding himself. He had a terrific sense of humor. Rare was the email or personal visit from John that did not include a new joke or funny story. In an email in July after his birthday he sent his Dad this one, typical of many: Good morning Dad, A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live on average 15 years longer than men who mention it. John will be missed by many who had the pleasure of knowing him. John’s Celebration of Life will be private by invitation only due to COVID restrictions.
