I will sincerely miss John's wonderful sense of humor. On several occasions we would meet for business and I would end up having the best time just talking with him! One of my favorite memories is first meeting his parents, Penny and Jerry at a lunch date. John was just hilarious with his teasing back and forth with us. Always was such a treat to be around him! Aside from being a wonderful person, he was a wonderful "business" friend!

I was only 6 years old when John's arrival to this world made me Aunt Jill. He and I really grew up together and I relish all the memories of our days making "machines" and setting up "stores". Though we didn't see each other often as adults, I always made a point of trying to sit next to him at any gathering because his dry sense of humor, mostly in my ear under his breath, always kept me in stitches. He and I wrote to each other each July birthday and although our communications were far apart, it always felt comfortable. I will miss him very much. Phil and I send our deepest sympathies to his wife, Mary and his daughter Sara. To my brother, Jerry, I can't begin to imagine the pain of losing a child. I am so sorry for you and Penny and of course Druscilla. May all your beautiful memories give you peace in the coming days.

So sorry to hear of Johns passing. He was a gem of a person. He helped me with advertising in Chico since 2007. I was shocked when I heard of his passing. I cried. He was a dear person and excellent at his job. I will miss him coming by every October to help us with bus kiosks. Our loss and heavens gain. Rest In Peace John. Brenda Dowdin.

I worked with John on and off during my career as a web designer in Chico. I always found him to be a wonderfully funny individual, loved to tease and always had a smile. He was a fantastic salesperson and whenever I had the chance to work with him It always went smoothly! He will be missed.

Dear Penny and Jerry,
I recently learned of John's death. I think I knew John only as a young man when he and Dru tagged along on some of our outings in the 70's and 80's. My heart goes out to you and Penny. Life can be so unfair, taking our young ones far too early and while they are still in the prime of their lives.
Christie and I are mourning this loss with you, and keeping you and Penny in our thoughts and prayers. We miss you.
Love, Roger

So many memories over the years...but one of my favorites was John honing his salesmanship at a very young age, probably when he was about 8 or so. We lived in a small house behind Jerry and Penny in Carmichael. Where other kids may have had a lemonade stand or other enterprise, John usually had a store and, of course, we were invited to shop. Boy, he could "pitch" any item in such a way that you just knew you were getting a deal. In addition to the sales price, John always remembered to tack on tax, handling fees, insurance and anything else he happened to be learning about at the time. And he always had that little smile that went along with your purchase, just to let you know you were getting "a deal." He will be missed.

It was our pleasure to work with John at Stott. He was always so thoughtful, never rushed, and yes, always had a good story. In his own calming way, he would share stories of his family, and of course, his dogs out on the property that he was so proud of. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.

John loved completely and was well loved .his spirit, always reflected his family and his work. He gave and he got graciously. John will be missed. Penny and Jerry were young when John was born and they had a great time growing up together. Your loss will be heavy upon you but will grow a little lighter with time and memories and one day you will be able to speak of John and laugh within the memory.

It was a joy in our lives to have known John. Though our lives didn’t intersect often or for long at a time, we always enjoyed our times with him, as we watched and/or heard about his activities and progress in life, from boy to man. And he was easy for us to know, as, each time we came together, we took up again as easily as if we had last left off only a few hours before instead of the actual years between. Our last visit with John was at Penny's birthday folk-music concert last year, when we talked at some length with John about family and old times.
The loss of a child is huge for a parent. It's not supposed to be this way; it's our children who should be saying goodbye to us, as they continue on after we have gone. But none of us is completely gone, as long as we live on in the hearts and memories of friends and family. Yes, John’s life was cut way too short, but we hold dear the memories he has left with us and his place in our hearts. We are happy that he was and remains part of our lives.
We send our heart-felt condolences to all family.

I was so saddened to receive the message of John’s passing. I remember flipping hamburgers with him when Jerry first considered running for public office, that is before he learned better.. It was a warm day in Sacramento and hundreds of friends
and Interested democrats came to hear Jerry speak his views. John, many others and myself just kept laughing and flipping. He was a happy soul. I have loved that kid all my adult life along with Drucilla and Penny and Jerry and their loved ones. I am so glad he enjoyed the years he had surrounded by such love. Barbara Bradley-Burks

dear Jerry & Penny,
I am so very sorry for your loss. There are never enough words to write about Johns way to early death. (Having lost my brother and my parents having been being alive and well I understand your pain). The love and encouragement you always gave to john and then to his daughter continues your personal journeys of health and well being. Wish I could give you both a big hug, but even without the distance, covid says no.
Please take care of yourselves and know that our thoughts are with you during these difficult times.
all of our love, L&J

John was my student in 3rd grade. As his teacher, I remember John as a diligent student with a great sense of humor. A favorite memory is when his dad, Jerry, attended his first parent conference that year, and grilled me about what page we were on in the reader, what concepts we had covered in math, etc. His parents love him deeply and were always looking out for him & celebrating his many talents & successes. I have been friends with the Scribner’s since that time & have attended both of John’s weddings & many fun times as well as sad at the loss of grandparents. I remember sitting around the Thanksgiving table with Scamp, the cat, having a place & being on his best behavior. This was often followed by John doing some amazing magic tricks. John was an excellent magician. Most of all I remember John as a kind, loving, caring person. We need more people like John in this world, not less. Missing you sweet boy. Give a hug from me to your amazing grandparents. Tell Herb we are fighting to save the lands he loved & cared for so well.

I am deeply saddened to hear about John’s sudden passing. I was a business client with John for many years through Stott and we worked together on many projects from Redding to Yuba City. John was ALWAYS nice and went way beyond the “extra mile” for me! I know I must have tested his patience on many occasions, but John never showed any sign that I was anything but a partner he was helping to succeed. No matter how many last-minute changes or contract questions I had, John would still show up at my office with pictures of possible locations, helpful ideas and a smile on his face! John will be greatly missed and forever remembered as a trusted business partner and a helpful friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, associates and anyone who had the privilege of knowing John.

John was not only my Stott sales rep, but through the years we developed a friendship. I knew the moment I met him for the first time, that we were going to get along great. Not only do we share the same type of sense of humor, but also share the love of craft beer and music. When we weren't writing up advertising deals, John was a faithful fan of my band "Reunion" when we played at Feather Falls Casino. He always had a smile on his face, and a quick and witty one-liner to throw at me. He was the utmost professional in business, and just the most pleasant guy to do business and converse with. I'm going to miss our laughter-filled meetings and his kind and witty nature. God speed, John.
