My sister and I took Coach's tennis class at Butte College. We were never any good, but we sure had a great time in his class and cuttin' up with him. I ran across his obituary and mentioned it to my sister who had these two old photos from back in the day. He was a really neat man.

I played a lot of sports for a lot of coaches in my life and Chet was one of the greatest. A strict disciplinarian, which didn't go over well with some athletes. But if you gave Chet what he asked of you, he would do anything for you and I saw him do that many times for myself and other Butte players. My car broke down once for a week and he drove to Gridley to pick me up each morning and dropped me back off after practice. I can truly say I loved the man. RIP Chet, I will miss you dearly and I appreciate everything you did for me, you made me a better athlete and a better more successful person in life.

Raymond Rummell posted a condolence

Wow! With tears in my eyes i ask myself, "What can i say about Chet Lyssy?" My name is Raymond Rummell, i am 54 years old and i grew up obsessed with playing tennis. Of course any youngster that wanted to be anything in tennis in Butte County knew (because my parents told me so) that being in Chet's Summer tennis camp was an annual summer must (boot camp in 110 degree weather is what it was) with Chet barking out military type orders all morning long. If you survived the week long experience, you would surely learn how to be a better tennis player. I was very athletic and at ten to twelve years old or so i barely survived each summer tennis camp experience and begged my parents to let me do another week that summer. The next summer i would crave the tennis camp experience and beg my parents some more. Family vacations and all kinds of important things were scheduled around those coveted tennis camps! Chet knew how hard he could push you, if you let him, and he pushed me all day long. I had the pleasure of playing against Chet's son Lane Lyssy as he made our Pleasant Valley High School Tennis team (Headed by the infamous Collins and Halls brothers) earn every point and we were always trying to figure out if we could conquer the great Lane Lyssy's tennis prowess and leadership of his team. How are you Lane, call me (530) 513-1582. Love to hear from you!!! In 1991 I would finally end up playing for Chet at Butte College on the tennis team when i was 26 years old. I had, however, forgotten how strict and demanding Chet was and he had to "straighten me out" and put me in my place and make sure we all knew who the boss was..., not Raymond...LOL!!! i was the captain of the team and number 1 in singles and doubles and was 3 matches from winning state competition that year but fell ill at the tournament and lost to a guy i beat easily earlier that year. I was very upset at the loss and i can remember fondly that Chet came over and consoled me by complimenting me on trying to win while playing sick. i am sure the loss was painful to him also. I really wanted to win that one for my old coach as Butte College Tennis was on the chopping block and well past its days of glory. I could tell many stories about Chet! He was famous for saying, "You there! Get over here! Stand there, do this, now do that!" (a very specific mini instruction of some sort to help me get better at eye contact or footwork or racket head control, etc) and then he would say, "now, go hit a million tennis balls just like that and then come back and i will give you another lesson. If i hesitated he might say something like, "Don't just stand there, get those feet moving!" Then, I would think to myself, "What did he just say? This coach is crazy!" And Chet was crazy, crazy about life in general, tennis, discipline, doing things properly, and winning, winning, winning. One point at a time, even if it took 50 strokes. "Just hit ground strokes cross court all day long until they miss," he would say. Cause, hey, he didn't have to do the running.
Lately, I had been longing to see Chet one more time, knowing he was getting pretty old. I would find myself purposefully glancing around at tennis tournaments looking for him, asking if he had been around. But like so many things in life, we don't always get what we want. Chet helped me to know how to deal with that also. Many, many people were groomed by Chet in various ways and many of us are indebted to him!!! I for one am continually thankful to him and am a better person because of him. Oh, Chet would happy to know i coached Summer Tennis Camps for CARD for 14 years and put many of his successful techniques into practice and his legacy lives on. May God bless his family in their time of grief, in Jesus name, Amen!!!

Coach! One of my favorite people at Butte College. I enjoyed many conversations with Chet by the tennis courts. He was always trying to recruit my brother to play tennis for Butte. He would be happy to know my brother is still playing tennis. And speaking a little Russian, too. My condolences to Chet’s family. His was a life well lived.

When I was younger are used to attend all of Chet Lyssy’s tennis camps at Oro West Racquet Club.. he was such a huge part of my childhood that brings a smile to my face always… Sometimes he would put tennis courts in and some of us would get to go with him and help paint the lines etc. it was always so much fun… I remember his son Lane being around a lot too....such good people....As we get older life gets tougher and it just makes you appreciate the simple times of being a kid ....those are special times I hold close in my heart...I had the pleasure of running into him over the years at the Chico Racquet Club...I remember about 5 years ago was the first time I had seen him for many many years and I jumped out of my seat and my eyes welled up with tears...I hadn’t seen him in so long...I ran up to him gave him a huge hug and introduced him to my family...right before he left I asked him if I was a Walnut yet?....(He arranged us in groups of peanuts, pistachios (I believe) and Walnuts! Over the last couple of years I ran into him a couple more times and one time he watched my sons match with me... I will never forget his unique smile to this day ...Thank you Chet Lyssy for all the memories I just lost my dad last year and it’s the toughest hardship I’ve ever had to go through and still is, so I pray for all of Chet’s family and kids that you find peace in all the special memories you have created over the years and that your grief not be to heavy for your hearts... With Love, Alyssa (Furry )Slater
