The cemetery is located atop a hill with a 360 degree view and it's very quiet and pretty. It was a crisp but sunny and pleasant day. Handsome and curious little gray squirrels were bouncing around everywhere, on and about the oak trees, their bushy tails longer than their bodies, while majestic birds of prey soared casually overhead, seemingly content with wafting along in the breeze and appreciating the day. A nice floral arrangement adorned the grave site and Dad's casket was draped in a bright, clean and new American flag. A modest, although creative, written and pictorial pamphlet was available for attendees.
The pallbearers were Derek, Mark, Wayne, Kirk (Mark's oldest) and Norma's sons, Arlen and Randy. Besides the pallbearers, the attendees were Norma, Cressie, Mark's wife, Alicia, Derek's wife, Christie and daughter Ali, Arlen's wife, Randy's wife (girlfriend?), Randy's son, Kirk's wife, Lisa and an assistant funeral director. There was appropriate music, including the music that Dad enjoyed (Dixieland Jazz). The funeral Director, Tom, did a very nice job in coordinating the memorial and making everyone as comfortable as could be expected under the circumstances. His words were appropriate, friendly, thoughtful and comforting. Apparently at Norma's request, the Director used the correct German pronunciation of the Nippe name - Nip pa - which was probably a reflection of Dad's pride in his Germanic ethnicity. The Director also read some of the condolences and remembrances posted on the Ramsey website, including yours. He also read the Obituary out loud.
Mark was able to gather himself and control his emotions to proudly deliver a few appropriate and quite thoughtful words about Dad.
Three young Air Force officers (two women, one male bugler) who were members of the Air Force Honor Guard, perhaps from Beale Air Force Base just south of Oroville, were present and performed a very respectful and dignified military salute which honored Dad's selfless contribution to country and evoked a powerful emotional response from all present (in particular, the blowing of Taps and the presentation of the meticulously folded flag to the widow).
Following several individual and personal farewells to Dad, the casket was lowered into the moist, dark brown earth and the services concluded.
The engraved headstone was then uncovered to reveal the identity of the departed, side-by-side with an incomplete engraving for his life partner. It was a humble and fitting memorial event, about one hour in length.
I've tried to descriptively capture my perception of the day for you and I hope I've included everything of significance.
Wayne

Dad,
You are an extraordinary man with so many gifts. Although you didn't talk about the many stories much, you were a honorable WWII veteran who proudly served his country, decorated with many medals and ribbons. Your conversations were always witty, intellectual, precise and concise, remembering explicitly dates and times of every detail - sometimes more than I wanted to hear. Dad, I know I've said this once before, maybe not enough though, but I am so proud of you and I am so proud to be your son. My heart is so heavy right now, but I will always remember us ( you, Wayne, Mark, me and Star) being together at Scheideck - it was one of the happiest times and place in my youth - maybe just because you were there. I miss you dad and I will always keep you in my heart. I love you. Love always your son.
Derek

Heaven has gained another angel. I regret that I was not able to be with Dick during the time he had to spend in the hospital, but was grateful to be able to speak to him on the phone many times. Dick was so very intelligent that when I would ask him a simple question, I would always get a lengthy answer. One example was when I was having a problem with the water dispenser on my refrigerator. Oh my goodness.... 30 minutes later, in conclusion to my question, "it is probably a kink in the water line." In the meantime, I learned all about refrigeration. I love you "Daddy Dick" and will miss our conversations. May God keep and protect you until we meet again.

Dick was the father of my 3 sons, Wayne, Mark, & Derek Nippe. It hurts me that he is gone now as we had an 11 year marriage at which time our sons were born. He has been happily married to Norma for many years. His biological sons will miss him greatly and are pained at his loss and shall always be. Gratefully, he was able to write his WWII experiences and each of his sons have a copy, as do I. There is no doubt he was a hero of WWII, although quite humble about it. We are so thankful that he was able to share his experiences before meeting the Lord.
Please know we share the sorrow you feel and rest assured any aid you require will be graciously available. May the beautiful memories you shared see you through this loss, they are forever!
