Alfred McCoy

Obituary of Alfred Joe McCoy

His Legacy… Al McCoy born Dec 16, 1927, died Nov 9, 2019.  He was the youngest of 12 children,  born at home near Chekotah, OK. With the Dust Bowl era, the family moved to the Bakersfield region to work the orchards and oil fields. He attended 1 year of Bible college in Georgia, then transferred to Pasadena College where he met and married Ruth LaVerne Smith.  They moved to Oroville, LaVerne’s hometown, and thus began 60 years of service to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene (Board member, Sunday School Superintendent, Bible Quiz coach) and Palermo Elementary School.  Al served as Palermo School teacher (21 years) and Principal (12 years).   He retired from teaching in 1983, operating McCoys’ Tree Service until his ”second” retirement in 2007.  Never one to sit idly by, in 2008 he readily returned to the classroom as a volunteer at Helen Wilcox.  "Mr. McCoy" then graduated to "Grandpa McCoy".

His Family… He is survived by his four children–Brenda, Joe, Bill, and Harold; 12 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren (with more on the way) who celebrate the legacy he has bestowed upon us.  He loved his grandchildren fully and unconditionally.  Family always came first, so his presence could be relied upon at the many sporting events, band concerts, Bible quizzes, church and school activities–all the important moments.

His Farewell Service… In lieu of flowers, please consider donating time to read with a child, or donate to a school fundraiser. Services will be held at 2:00 on Nov 20th at the Oroville Church of the Nazarene, followed by a dessert reception. Arrangements are entrusted to Ramsey Funeral Home 530-534-3877.
