Barbara and my mother became friends when I was 9 years of age. They met while attending church in San Bruno in the late 1950's, serving together in women's ministry. I remember Mom taking us with her to visit Barbara over the years. Her home was warm and relaxing, so I was happy to tag along.
As an adult, I was still able to visit her on occasion and loved her practical approach to life. On one visit she was showing me around her home and, at the entrance to one room, there was a tall file cabinet that, to me, seemed out of place in its location. When I asked about it, she said her husband had put it there. "And you let him?" I queried. "Well, he lives here too." she responded casually. See? Practical. And also peace producing. I never forgot her easy wisdom.
Many years later, a mutual friend brought Barbara to my rural home where she and my mom had a grand reunion, catching up and visiting as if they had never been apart.
In these later years, I have had the privilege of visiting Barbara on occasion with a friend and we have enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with someone dear. On one of those visits, I went home with a lovely painting of a vase of flowers that she had done. It has been and will remain a sweet reminder of a woman who had a significant and positive role in my life.
My prayer is for peace and comfort for the family and all who loved Barbara Ahlberg.
