Sam Gaines

Obituary of Sam Gaines

His Legacy… Sam Gaines, at the age 93, peacefully passed from this life on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. Sam the youngest child of Emory Miles Gaines and Ida (Beard) Gaines was born on the family farm in Lead Hill, Arkansas on June 18, 1924. Sam graduated from Lead Hill High School in May 1943. Then promptly enlisted in the Army in June 1943 and served until 1946. It was during this time that two best friends Sam and Buford met two sisters who soon became their wives. Sam was a construction carpenter and lived in both southern California and Anchorage, Alaska. When he moved to the Oroville area in 1961 to build the Keg Room he became a local business owner. Flashing that devilish smile he told us he built the Keg Room in a spot where the dam workers had to drive by every day. He also worked on the Dam during its construction. He was a member of the local Masons Lodge 103, the Eagles, the Lions Club and the VFW. It was to these organizations he donated countless hours of labor. He was also involved in the memorial for the workers who lost their lives during the construction of the dam that resides on top of the dam and the local Veterans Wall that is now being constructed at the Veterans Hall. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle. His generosity was only surmounted by the love he had in his heart for his family and friends. Everyone whose lives he touched will especially miss his practical jokes.

His Family… He is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 51 years Mary Jane, a son Mark, brothers, Park, Homer, Woodrow, CT, Clyde, Ray, sisters, Ethel and Jessie. He leaves behind three sons Charles, Timothy and James, six grandchildren, Charles Jr., Christopher, Dustin, Kyle, Kayla and Nicholas, five great grandchildren and three daughter-in-law’s Connie, Tonya and Lynn.

His Farewell Service… Private family services have been held. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or the local Masons Lodge 103.  Arrangements are entrusted to Ramsey Funeral Home 530-534-3877.
