Obituary of Sarah Whitfield

Sarah Whitfield was born November 29, 1935 in Nettleton, Mississippi to Ellie May & Jim Shumpert. She attended Pleasant Grove High School in Nettleton, Mississippi. Later she played basketball for Dezzie Enos where they won a state championship. Sarah married her loving belated husband L.E. Whitfield Jr. on December 4, 1956 in Tupelo Mississippi. In 1958 Sarah moved to Oroville, California and began working as a Housekeeper/Caregiver and later embarked in a career at Pacific Coast Produce for nearly 40 years. She was a longstanding member/ stewardess/usher/choir member at Taylor Memorial C.M.E. Church of Oroville for numerous years. Sarah loved attending her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren sports events as well as fishing and cooking beans "every" Monday night. She was known to everyone as Grandma, a truly amazing woman. Sarah is preceded in death by her husband L.E. Whitfield and first born child Charles E. Whitfield. She is survived by her children Carl Sr., George Wayne, Glenda Faye, Jimmy Wayne and Alexander Sr., all of Oroville. She is also survived by her 3 sisters: Helen, Sue and Jerry, 4 brothers: John, Glen, Stewart and Willie "D" all of Nettleton, Mississippi, 24 Grandchildren & 24 great-grandchildren. Sarah was a pillar in the community and will be truly missed. Her Farewell Services will begin on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 with a visitation from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Oroville Funeral Home, 1454 Montgomery St. Oroville California. Her Funeral Service will be held at her home church Taylor Memorial C.M.E Church, 1957 "B" Street Oroville, California on Friday, January 5, 2017 at 11:00 am. A Graveside Service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oroville California Arrangements are entrusted to Oroville Funeral Home (530) 533-0323.
