Obituary of Lucille G Goodier
Lucille Gollehon Goodier (Lucy Bunstock), long time active resident of Oroville and later Hillsborough, California, passed away peacefully at age 94. She was born on May 6, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska and had many stories growing up in the Great Depression with her parents Charles Millard (Mike) and Tillie S. Gollehon of Blair, Nebraska and her older siblings Millard, Gene and Louise. She sold “Victory Garden” vegetables door to door in the neighborhood starting at age 4 and was always hard-working, studious and energetic. Lucy proved early on that she was a survivor by living through a bout of polio at age one and being hit by a car six months later.
After excelling at Benson High School in Omaha (graduation 1948), Lucy worked as a typist at the Union Pacific Railroad headquarters from age 18 to save up enough money to put herself through college. In the early 1950’s she studied nursing at the University of Nebraska (Omaha), earning her Registered Nurse certificate in 1953. It was at this university that Lucy met medical student William H. Bunstock of McCook, Nebraska who she married on February 3,1953. While working as a nurse and a surgical resident, the young couple started their family with daughter Susan Bunstock Nicholson, followed 18 months later with son Stanley Bunstock and two years after that with son Stuart Bunstock. Their first born, William, died soon after birth.
In 1959 Lucy and her family drove the family station wagon westward to start a new life while being stationed at Mather Air Force Base in the Sacramento area. Her husband Bill held the position of Chief of Surgery as an Air Force Captain. Lucy was busy with three small children, the pre-school Co-op and many social endeavors. During this time Lucy and Bill met their best of friends, Dr. John and Cay Floyd, who would later join them in Oroville, California and become partners in a surgical practice there.
In 1963 Lucy and her family moved northward to Oroville where Dr. Bunstock started private medical practice with Dr. Nick Parapid and later with fellow surgeon and best friend Dr. John Floyd. During that time Lucy was actively involved in various PTA’s, including being president of the Stanford Avenue Elementary PTA, as a member of the Omega Nu sorority (Alpha Beta Chapter), an officer of the Butte Glenn Medical Society, an officer and founding member of the Gourmet Club, a member of the local tennis club and Table Mountain Golf Course, an officer of the Oroville Republican Women’s club, and an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
In her 40’s Lucy earned her nursing degree again after letting her nursing license lapse while raising children. She then worked as a public health and as a traveling school nurse. Lucy and her first husband enjoyed traveling abroad as well, traveling to Spain, Mexico, Morrocco, Egypt and many far-off locals. She actively supported Dr. Bunstock’s surgical practice and became very engaged socially with her many friends and acquaintances, most of whom have pre-deceased her.
After a 39-year marriage, Lucy and her husband parted ways in 1992. In 1993 she married a long-time friend, Jonathan Goodier Jr. They lived at his Hillsborough, CA home for the next three decades while she still maintained her home and ties in Oroville. In Hillsborough Lucy had a very active social life and continued her love of travel. She was a valued member of the Burlingame United Methodist Church, arranging home grown flowers for the alter and preparing many delicious cookies and treats for the congregation each week.
After an almost 30-year second marriage, and upon her husband’s passing at age 96, Lucy returned in May of 2023 to live at her long-time home in Oroville with her son Stanley Bunstock until her recent illness and injury. She was fairly active considering her age until the recent unfortunate events and was the enthusiastic matriarch of the Bunstock family during family get togethers and otherwise. Most recently Lucy hosted her traditional early-Christmas extended family gathering at her Oroville home, complete with catered Chinese food and a fun gift exchange. She was always ready to show her support and care for each family member.
Lucy Bunstock, later known as Lucy Gollehon Goodier, was known for her love of family, never-ending energy, intellectual curiosity, interesting conversations and sociability. She made many friends along the way and had many an interesting story to tell. Lucy was a true optimist who strongly believed in serendipity (“the best is yet to come”). National and international current events fascinated her.
Lucy is survived by her three adult children: Susan Bunstock Nicholson of Danville, CA, Stanley Bunstock of Oroville, CA and Stuart Bunstock of Sacramento, CA, by her seven grandchildren (Chase, Shane and Valeria Nicholson), Sean and Sergio Bunstock, Alana de Hinojosa and Quinn Bunstock), by her two great-grandchildren (Kyle and William Bunstock) her Great-great grandchild Andrew Bunstock, and by many members of the extended Gollehon family in Omaha, Nebraska and beyond.
Final arrangements are under the direction of the Ramsey Funeral Home of Oroville and her final resting place will be in the Sunrise Section at Memorial Park Cemetery. The graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Red Cross for the Los Angeles fire victims in Lucy’s name would be greatly appreciated (https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation.html/, or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or by texting the word CAWILDFIRES to 90999).
