Barbara Shields

Obituary of Barbara Jean Shields

In Loving Memory of Barbara Jean Shields January 12, 1931 - November 21, 2024

Barbara Jean Shields was born on January 12, 1931, in the family home on Sierra Ave in Thermalito, CA, where she spent her childhood. She was the beloved daughter of George and Frances Huston and grew up alongside her older brothers, Harold and Bill, and her younger siblings, Mary (Murrish), Stanley, and Darrell. Barbara met Robert Shields at a dance at the Monday Club in Oroville, and the two were married on January 20, 1951, in Reno, Nevada. Together, they raised three children: Steve and Michael Shields, and Susan (Simmons).

Barbara worked as a dental assistant until the birth of her first child, Steve, at which point she dedicated herself to caring for her family. Known for her cooking skills, she delighted her loved ones with dishes such as Tamale Pie, roast beef, fruit salad, and mincemeat pie. Her home was always immaculate, and she took great pride in keeping it organized, vacuuming daily and ironing everything, even socks.

The Shields' home was the heart of family gatherings, especially during the holidays. Barbara would prepare a bountiful meal, and everyone enjoyed the warmth and joy of the occasion. If you visited her, you could count on being offered a bowl of ice cream topped with fresh strawberries when in season- though it was often easier to say yes than to decline, as she would persist in offering until you accepted.

Barbara had a deep love for her family, a passion for cooking, and an unwavering commitment to keeping her home in perfect order. She was also an avid reader, always finding time for a good book. Barbara is survived by her son Michael (Gail), daughter Susan (Gary), 13 grandchildren- Jennifer, Becky, Robbie, Ben, Ashley, Maggie, Logan, Luke, Laci, Cody, Kayla, Shane, and Brandy-and 17 great-grandchildren, along with 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Robert, and her beloved son, Steven. Barbara will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, warmth, and dedication to family will continue to live on in the hearts of her loved ones.

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, January 3, 2025, 11 am at Memorial Park Cemetery in the Gazebo, 5646 Lincoln Blvd, Oroville, CA 95966.
