Obituary of John Amzi Taylor

God called John Amzi Taylor, 70, home on January 29, 2022. He was born on April 11th, 1951 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to John and Myra Taylor. He had 2 sisters, Debbie and Jamie. John attended schools in Coweta and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He became interested in music at an early age and played the trumpet in the school bands until he graduated high school. During his time in the high school band John participated in the stage band, the concert band and the marching band. All were top rated and received superior an excellent rankings in competitions. John was particularly proud of bein a member of the Tiger Beats Sate Band in high school. The director, Paris York, made a lasting impact on John and the two kept in touch until Paris' death in the early 2000's. John was also a member of an elite group of musicians in the area known as the Young Tulsans. After graduating high school in 1969, John attended the University of Oklahoma on a music scholarship. He was a lifelong OU Sooner fan. In 1970, he enlisted in the Army and served in Korea as a medic. After he was honorably discharged in 1973, he returned to Broken Arrow where he worked for the fire department as one of the 1st Paramedics in the state. In 1974 he met Dorothy Raybould and they were married in 1975. They lived in Norman, Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma. They had 2 daughters - Michelle born in 1980 and Sara in 1982. They remained in Oklahoma until 1987 when John felt the calling to the ministry. The family moved to Joplin, Missouri so John could attend Ozark Bible College. During his time there he had the opportunity to visit different places to serve as a visiting minister - his favorite was 3 months he spent in Outlook, Saskatchewan Canada in 1988. There he met Warren and Bonnie Read who became lifelong friends. John graduate college in 1990 and began his ministry career in Needles, California at the Needles Christian Church. In 1995, the family moved to Oroville, California where John accepted the minister position at Foothill Boulevard Church of Christ. He remained there until his retirement in 2017. Throughout John's life music played a vital role. He was blessed with perfect pitch and had a beautiful singing voice. He taught himself to play numerous instruments including the piano, guitar, harmonica, banjo and mandolin. He was active in the local community bands in Oroville, Paradise and Chico playing trumpet and flugelhorn. He also played in the Paradise Symphony Orchestra. John was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sister and younger daughter, Sarah. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his daughter Michelle, grandchildren Natalie, Samantha, Katelyn, son-in-law Erik and grandchildren, Caleb & Mallory, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many many friends. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7-8 A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday February 26, 2022 at Pursuit Christian Church (formerly known as Foothill Boulevard Church of Christ).
