Obituary of Joan C. Brock

Joan Christin Brock, 73, passed away December 10, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born in Gridley, California on January 14, 1948. She attended Gridley schools and after graduating in 1966 went on to earn a degree in education from CSU Chico. She returned to her beloved valley and faithfully taught in the Gridley Unified School District for 38 years. “Mrs. Brock” had a passion for teaching and was a champion for the underdog often going the extra mile just to help a single student. Her charitable spirit did not need or want recognition, rather she loved to elevate students, teaching colleagues and those in the community. After retiring, Joan never stopped loving, teaching, and interacting with children. She cherished her time volunteering at FOCUS where she continued to serve the youth in her community. Retirement brought new passions like taking up marathon running in her 60’s, adventures with the Chico Hiking Association, water coloring, photography, camping with her dogs, and traveling with family and friends. She had an infectious passion for life and adventure. Skydiving at 70 is proof of that! The most important people in Joan’s life called her “Mimi” so, it’s no wonder she held celebrity status with her 3 grandchildren. She was a constant and loving presence in their lives, always supporting and encouraging them and her love will live on through them. A friend to all she met, Joan was warm, witty, and approachable. Her magnetic personality put those around her at ease. Her kindness drew others in. Her presence changed the atmosphere. Joan’s vibrant free spirit took everyone she spent time with on an unforgettable adventure! Joan is survived by her husband, Elmer; her son, Michael (Satia); her daughter, Valerie (Justin); adored grandchildren Jace, Charlotte, and Penelope; Sisters, Carol Nalls and Ellen Fisher (Dan); as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Shirley Back. Joan will be deeply missed by her husband, children, family, and friends.
