Obituary of Susan Few

Susan Few passed away on October 31, 2021 in Oroville, California. Sue was born named Suzette in Los Angeles County, California to Anne and Eugene LeNoir. Her father worked for MGM studios and as a child Sue loved to wait for him at the gates, she loved the movie Singing in The Rain and sharing the story of meeting Debbie Reynolds. Sue met her husband at a Jazz club and married John B.Few in 1955 and they owned a home in Beverly Hills. Sue saw Maya Angelou live which inspired her to name her daughter. She raised two children Maya and Gary. Sue worked for the A & M Records copyright department and loved all kinds of music, often bringing home the latest vinyl albums. She drove a VW Bug and loved going to the beach and sitting in the sun. She loved to tell the story of when she went to San Francisco to see the Count Basie Orchestra. Sue moved to Santa Cruz to be closer to her son and worked for the UCSC Extension office. Sue was a loving mother to her daughter Maya and did her best to raise her to be a strong smart woman, she was always proud of her children and loved her son’s original music and shared his interest in sports. When her son announced he was getting married she gave him her mother’s ring to offer as an engagement ring. Sue was kind to her daughter In-law Kathy and taught her to make her homemade enchiladas. Always on trend, Sue kept up on the latest fashions, movies, celebrities and music and submitted music reviews and wrote her own music column called Sound Check. At the start of the internet, Sue wrote a newsletter about music copyrighting that a local Santa Cruz record store sold. College students developing an underground music archive, IUMA, published it and Sue gained a fan base of appreciative musicians. When her first grandchild was born Sue was delighted and drove up to meet her at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse. After retiring, Sue bought a house in Oroville and moved to live near her sons new family and attend her granddaughter’s first birthday party. Sue loved her home with daughter Maya and they had many adventures exploring their new area, dining out was a favorite pastime. Sue loved being Granny Sue and welcomed all occasions to celebrate. She often arrived to the birthday parties of her three granddaughters, with a big bouquet of balloons and her arms full of presents. Sue had a natural beauty, unique sense of style and poise, and she knew how to take care of business. Always a fan of music, Sue was a community radio DJ with her own show called Coffee and Cigarettes; playing her favorite artists and songs from Joe Cocker, the Buena Vista Social Club, the Blues, the Beatles, Chet Baker Leon Russel, the Rolling Stones, Marcus James and Willie Deville. To remember her beautiful spirit, listen to some music. Sue will be missed by her friends and family and her love of life will carry on in her daughter Maya, son Gary, daughter-in-law Kathy and three granddaughters, Rose, Sage and Iris. In her final hours on this earth Sue listened to some of her favorite songs, the soundtrack of her life and was surrounded with words of love from family and friends and serenaded to the heavens with her son playing George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’ on his guitar.
