Jane Lesch wrote a sympathy message
“Robert will be greatly missed. He was kind, dedicated, smart, and a very talented musician. His death came as such a shock to us. He loved his scooter trips to state parks so much, there is a little consolation in that he was doing something he loved. Our deepest condolences, Dave and Jane Lesch”

This is very sad news. I was a post doc in Randy's lab a very long time ago, and like so many others, I was supported by Bob's professionalism, encouraged in my work by his upbeat and positive attitude to everything, and touched by his genuine kindness. He even offered to complete an experiment for me - 12 years after I left the lab… and it subsequently got published. I wish Bob's family the comfort of knowing that he changed so many lives for the better, and all of us the constant memory of a wonderful person.

I am so sad to hear the news about Uncle Bob. I will always remember our fun 4th of July parties together; it had been far too long since I had seen him. He will be missed.

It is with great sadness that I write these few words to commemorate a great colleague and human being. Bob was one of the most astute and collective individuals I have ever met. His calm and rational demeanor were his trademarks and characteristics that I highly regarded. To me, he was a wealth of many sources. I really enjoyed and will highly miss his conversations of the many subjects we would tackle including his subtle frustrations with his lab's backorders. In our political conversations he would be the more rational person who would guide me back to the more logical discourse. Because of his vast knowledge of plant life he was to be my guide in setting up my garden once I bought my house.
Now everytime I deliver to the Schekman lab I can't help but still see him at his desk. He was a pillar at Li Ka Shing.
Bob you will be missed, but not forgotten.
The world needs more people like you,

As Randy wrote above, Bob was an integral part of the experience for every member of the Schekman group. He taught, guided, and helped each new person when they joined the lab, and then continued as an unfailingly generous and reliable colleague for the rest of their time in Berkeley and after. (I expect I’m not alone in having contacted Bob over the years for a reagent or advice on a method!) I send my sincere condolences to Bob’s family and friends on your loss of and wish you all the best in this challenging time.

I am Robert's sister-in-law. When I first met Robert he was a very quiet college student. Over the years, Robert blossomed and became quite talkative. I think his time in the Peace Corps serving in Belize helped to bring him out of his shell. Robert led such an interesting life with his time in the Peace Corps, traveling around the US in his modified van and then he met Kim and got married in Hawaii and had the chance to have his family. Family was always very important to Robert. He was always the first to respond to my family emails and was eager for our family zoom calls.
Robert was a beautiful musician. He played the piano at our wedding and I was always impressed with how good he really was. Robert was also one of the smartest people I've ever met. We used to play Balderdash, where you try to guess the meaning of obscure words. It wasn't much fun for Robert because he actually knew the meaning of all the words. But he was a good sport and played along with all the rest of us that had no clue what those words meant.
Several years ago we had the chance to come to visit Robert, Kim, and Kristina. While we were there we visited my cousin, who had a long row of raspberries and Robert was just delighted when he was told he could eat as many as he could pick. I think he spent about an hour picking and eating raspberries that day. That was such a fun day.
I just can't believe he is gone. We will miss you Robert.

We mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Bob Lesch. He died doing what he loved, on an adventure alone on his souped-up scooter-motorcycle driving the roads around Lassen searching for the beauty in nature. He leaves behind his wife, Kim, and daughter, Kristine, and 30+ years of Schekman lab members whose lives and careers were enriched by his devotion to our work.
Bob came to Barker Hall from training for a master’s degree in Chem. E. here at Cal and before that from
a stint in the Peace Corps. He first had a position in the building as a safety officer and then when I joined HHMI,
I brought him on part-time to run the fermentor in the basement of Barker. Within a year or two, my previous manager left for a position at UCOP and I was delighted to ask Bob to step into a full-time position. Although Bob didn’t really have any training for what we were doing, he quickly took over lab management and organized supplies, yeast strains and equipment maintenance as it had never been in the 15 years before he joined us. But he was more than just a lab manager, he was a life counselor and friend to me and to all those whose lives he touched. Generations of former members of my lab have recounted how valuable Bob was to the daily life and functioning of our work and all wished they could have a “Bob” in their labs after their experience here.
I feel the loss quite personally and it adds another to the too many deaths of loved ones I have endured in recent
years. My wonderful current lab members are assembling a printed book of Bob’s many wildflower photographs taken
on his excursions in the hills, mountains and meadows of Northern California. We shall have this available in our lab in a few weeks, so please do drop in to share our memories of Bob when you have a chance.
Sadly, Randy

I will miss Bob as well. I remember him from 1999 when I was on sabbatical in Randy's lab, and then, when I moved to Berkeley, I could see how important Bob was to Randy. In fact, Bob was Randy's first concern when I asked Randy to move to LA. So, here I am in Berkeley instead. I remember Bob took the time to come to the interview seminar and once I was here, Bob helped me as I was setting up my lab, and answered so many questions from me and my lab manager. His answers were typically detailed, exact, and just perfect. He was such an integral part of Randy's lab, I cannot imagine the lab without him. Thank you Bob for your friendship to Randy, for taking care of his lab, and for welcoming me. Sabeeha

I was Bob's spanish teacher for over a year. As his teacher, I tried to make him talk about his passions, which wasn't difficult because he was so enthusiastic about everything. He was a very hard working student. The thing that shocks me the most is that I only knew him for a short time, vía Zoom meetings, and I still find this to be overwhelmingly sad, which says a lot about the impact that his life had on those around him.
Ha sido un gusto Bob, ¡hasta siempre!

As an old personal friend of Randy's, I loved that Bob just folded me into the research group as an annual visiting labmate. A highlight of each winter visit was greeting Bob, who had renewed my "visitor" card and cleared a desk and sometimes a bench for me. He was a brother to Randy, and therefore to me too. I'll always think of the lab as having Bob, quietly and warmly presiding over the ever-changing cast of Schekmanites. Rest in peace, dear friend.

I met Bob in 1982 when we were graduate students living at the Stebbins Hall co-op house at Cal. He was a kind man with a quiet sense of humor. I went hiking with him in recent years and am glad I took that photo of him taking a photo of a flower; the whole experience of nature gave him such joy. I can hardly believe this happened, and I offer my warmest thoughts to his family. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Bob shared this photo with me on June 6th. He captioned it, "Speaking of butterflies, I had a California Sister visit me while I was eating lunch, and it posed for an extraordinarily long time (at least a long time for a butterfly):" I've known Bob for 32 years. First as UCB MCB/Biochemistry employees, then as HHMI Lab Managers. I cannot even begin to express my feelings over his sudden loss. Last year he was my rock when my position was eliminated. He offered much needed support in his kind, gentle and analytical way. He began to include me in his lab email reports detailing his trips exploring California parks. I will always treasure those emails. He knew a lot about nature and I had looked forward to learning more from him about the wildflowers in our area and also to get to know him as a friend outside of work. May his family and all of the people whose lives he touched find peace amongst the wildflowers.

I still couldn't believe that Bob suddenly left us and I felt that he is still around. I would like to offer my deepest and most sincere condolences to Bob's family. Bob was the nicest and most self-disciplined person I have ever met. He kept everything so clean and organized in the lab, making our daily science life much easier and smoother. Every morning, when I stepped into the lab and saw his big smiles, I felt full of energy. He was always there to help me with any problems, not only lab issues but also personal emotions, even on weekends. His patience and useful suggestions accompanied me through some difficult times. I missed the moment he said "morning" and "night" to me each day; I missed the moment he taught me how to clean the freezer using his brilliant trick; I missed the moment he gave me encouragement and advice to heal my tears…I am used to the days he was around. Forever and always, Bob's memory lives with me and all of us.

I’m Bobs sister-in-law. He was a modest guy, didn’t like to be fussed over, didn’t like presents. The first few years I didn’t get him anything for Xmas, but then I started curating t-shirts, ones he could wear to work. Funny, science oriented ones were the best. I think he grew to rather enjoy them. I plan to make a quilt of his favorites for my niece. My mom lives with Bob & my sister. He was so good at helping her with whatever she needed, be it a lightbulb change or computer problem or auto maintenance. I’m so grateful that we had him in our lives. Larella

Bob was the kindest person and best lab manager I have ever known. His warmth and organized management made Schekman lab such a thriving and happy environment to do extraordinary science. He was my go-to person whenever I had any problem big or small, and he would explain to me with extreme patience and guided me through, sometimes with his typical humor and smile. Just one week before his tragic accident, Bob came to the lab on weekend to take care of the freezer, and as early as 7am Sunday morning when I swung by the lab to check my cells, I found Bob was there too and he already moved out all the stuff from the malfunctioning freezer in time. That was just a small case of many to show the dedication of Bob to the lab. His simple presence in the lab just made me feel assuring and motivated. His love for nature and passion to learn Spanish will also inspire me to be a man diligent at work and in the mean time keep a good balance in life. I felt so devastated hearing the accident news and I cannot express fully my sorrow. I give my deepest sorry and condolence to the Lesch family. The happy memory of Bob will live on with me forever in my love.

Bob was so helpful to me when I came from Atlanta to Randy’s lab for a sabbatical. He made my transition seamless and kept track of the details with extraordinary precision, as he did with all things. I went hiking with him at Mt Diablo early in the pandemic and was astounded at his knowledge of the plants and flowers. He taught me volumes in one hike. I was looking forward to more hikes with him when I come back this fall. I am so sad at his passing.

Dear Bob, I was devastated hearing the news of your passing. I will truly miss your cheerful and joyful personality that I got to enjoy during my time in the Schekman lab. You enabled my stay in Berkeley to great length and I will miss our regular email exchange on anything from experimental protocols, and lab materials that were always accompanied by your personal travel stories and, of course, a whole bunch of great wildlife flowers. I will truly miss you and I wish your family and friends strength and courage. Kerensa (The Netherlands).
