Obituary of Walter Lawrence Shaner

His Legacy… Walter Lawrence “Larry” Shaner passed away on November 20th, 2019 in the afternoon breeze after a serene morning hunt in Colusa County at the age of 81.  He had a heart attack while talking to his nephew Jeff at their duck club. Larry passed swiftly like the wind, without pain amongst the open air with the sun on his face. Larry was born in New Brighton, Pennsylvania (1938) as the eldest child to Walter C. Shaner and Martha Stewart Shaner. His family moved to Oroville in 1946. He graduated Oroville High School in 1956 and Chico State In 1961 with a degree in agriculture. He served in the California National Guard 1956-1959 and helped in Yuba City during the floods. Larry enjoyed hunting from a young age and loved being in nature, so much so, that he could not stand to have a desk job. As a result, he opted to be a mailman for 42 years so he could be outdoors while working. He married his beloved wife Luisa in 1975 and they raised two sons. He was a devoted husband and father who loved his family very much. Larry truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting with family and friends, fishing, hunting, playing with his granddaughters and eating (he had a voracious appetite, but always said he wasn’t hungry). He also enjoyed making friends wherever he went, especially fellow postmen and postwomen.  His gentle spirit will be forever missed by those who knew and loved him.

His Family… Larry was predeceased by his wife Luisa in 2017, brother Stu in 2016, sister Kathy Stingley in 2005, and longtime friend & hunting partner Gordon Jensen in 2019. He will be lovingly remembered by his sons: Eric and Jonathan; daughter in law: Jacqueline; granddaughters, Emery and Finnley; sisters: Peggy Schultz and Betty Ledford.

His Farewell Service… A celebration of Larry’s life will be held Saturday, January 4, 2020, 12 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Eagles (2010 Montgomery St, Oroville, CA 95965) for all his family and friends.  Contact his family or Ramsey Funeral Homes for information.  Arrangements are entrusted to Ramsey Funeral Home 530-534-3877.
