Vere was very close in my growing up years, living one block away. As a teenager, I worked for Vere, Hal, Allen , and our father in the family hay business, that saved dairymen 50% by chopping hay (and blowing it into barns -my job, two tons per wagon) , compared to baled hay. Rea had invented the innovative hay chopping and blowing equipment into barns just in time to employ two of four returning WW II sons.
When the dairy and hay contracting business ebbed in the late 1950s Rea, Hal and Vere rented rice land. Rice was more profitable than hay contracting.
Vere's sports attitude, warm attitude and smile in hard situations will be greatly missed.
