Bill was my cousin, seven years my senior, and for most of our lives we shared very little, other than Christmas cards.
When I was a young teen in high school, Bill was completing his first Engineering degree at Wichita, Kansas.
We had little in common.
Bill lived in California, and never shovelled snow. I lived in Calgary, and shovelled snow very well. Again, we had little in common.
Bill attained multiple advanced University degrees. I was a dropout, and only returned to university to earn one degree. We had little in common.
Bill came to Calgary to attend a High School reunion, and agreed to meet with me and my sister at a restaurant. I was early in arriving, and so was Bill. We began to talk. We were both retired at the time and both had heart problems. We had something in common.
We talked considerably, and seemed to "hit it off" (so to speak). He was a highly educated man, and I was not his equal in this regard. Oddly, the more we talked, the more we seemed to have in common!
I didn't know my cousin well, but I found that although people follow different paths in life, they can still become friends. Bill was a real good guy. I'm glad I re-connected with him. I hope he felt the same way.
