Obituary for Marion (Pete) Cecelia Willey
Marion (Pete) Cecelia Willey, born August 9, 1932, in Irwin, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026, in Chico, California. She was 93 years old.
The third of eight children born to George and Marie West, Marion was baptized on August 21, 1932, received her First Communion on May 19, 1940, and was confirmed on May 9, 1946, all at the Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin, PA. Her Catholic faith would remain a guiding light throughout her life.
Marion married James M. Willey, on January 14, 1960, in Seattle, WA. Together they raised two daughters, Marva Willey and Mary Willey, who were the center of her world.
Marion’s working life reflected her energy, faith and care for others. She worked as a soda jerk and drugstore clerk from 1948 to 1951, then as a teletype operator for Northwest Airlines from 1951 to 1960, starting in Detroit and ending in Seattle. Later, she served as a customs broker (1963–1965) in Laurier, WA and insurance clerk (1966–1969) in Joshua Tree, CA. In 1993, she embraced pastoral ministry, serving for more than 20 years, and she volunteered with the Cal Fire Information Center, offering calm and kindness to many during difficult times in Oroville, CA.
She was a devoted member of St. Thomas Altar Society and Catholic Ladies Relief Society #12. She was also a member of the Liturgy Committee. Marion served the parish in many ways as a servant leader. Quiet, but strong, she helped provide guidance to the best of her ability.
Marion is survived by her daughters Marva and Mary Willey; her brother Leo West of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her sister Susie McNally and husband Frank of Milford, California; 16 nieces and nephews; 23 great-nieces and nephews; and 11 great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim Willey; her parents, George and Marie West; sisters Gene and Joan; and brothers Don, Jim, and George.
Marion found great joy in family gatherings, lunches and shopping outings with her sisters, and road trips with her daughters. She loved exploring national and state parks, but her favorite place was always at home, tending to her garden under the open sky.
She wanted to be remembered for loving her family – all of them, and her church family. Her gentle spirit, faith, and love of family will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church (1330 Bird St, Oroville, CA 95965 ) May 21,2026 at 11:00 a.m.
