A funeral service will be held on Monday,
March 9, 2026, at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints, 400 Spruce St. Gridley, CA for
James (Jim) Tupen, 91, of Gridley. Time of ser-
vice has been set for 11:00 a.m.
Jim passed away due to sudden illness on
Thursday, February 26, 2026, in San Saba
County Texas.
He was born June 18,1934 in Gridley, CA to
James and Reva Tupen.
Jim was a long-time resident of Gridley
and after a 28-year career with the California
Highway Patrol, he retired out of the
Oroville office.
Prior to being in the CHP, Jim served in the
United States Air Force in the 89th Weather
Reconnaissance Squadron as a flight crew member flying B-29’s.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed
hunting and fishing from a young age. He was
a member of the Masonic Lodge and a long-time
member of the LDS Church. Jim also served on
the Gridley City Council as Vice Mayor. Jim frequently said he had lived a good life.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife,
younger brother and parents.
He is survived by his two sons, Doug (Kristin)
Tupen of Rigby Idaho and JT Tupen of Chico,
one daughter, Wendy Maral of Gridley, and 4
grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Bishop Dustin Barnette of the Gridley First
Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints will officiate the service. Interment will be
at the Gridley Biggs Cemetery.
Reception to follow immediately after at the
Justeson Celebration Barn, 1803 Riley Rd.
in Gridley.
