Gary Richard Nystuen, 72, of Oroville, passed away on Wednesday, February 4th, 2026 after complications from cancer.

Gary was born on March 28th, 1953 in Oroville, CA. He is the only child of late Richard and Florence Nystuen. He attended Burbank Elementary School, Las Plumas High School and continued his education with paramedic school at the Daniel Freeman Hospital in Los Angeles. He became a volunteer fire fighter for the El Medio Fire Department at 18 years old. He served for this district for 50+ years moving up the ranks from Fire Fighter eventually becoming Chief, all as a volunteer. His primary job was taking care of patients as a paramedic for Oroville Hospital Ambulance serving 20+ years.  

In his spare time, he enjoyed playing guitar, camping and golfing anytime he could. He also loved to cook. He won the Fire Fighter Chili Cook-off multiple times. 

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Nystuen and his 4 children: Jill Hawkins (married) of Oroville, Adam Nystuen (married) of Oroville, Emily Irwin (married) of Redding and Gary Nystuen (married) of Wichita, 5 grandchildren: Marcus 12, Andrew 10, Sam 10, Riley 1 and Ethan newborn.

A celebration of life will be held at Ramsey Funeral Home on February 25th at 11am.

A private graveside burial will be held at a later date.
