Obituary of Bernice Louise Hughes
Her Legacy…Bernice Louise Hughes, 89 years young, was born August 27, 1927 in Hanford, CA to Joseph & Elvira Gomes. Bernice died May 6, 2017 at Oroville Hospital surrounded by her sons, daughter and family. She met the love of her life of 47 years, Carl Hughes, at Sharpe Army Depot where she started her career in Bookkeeping and Secretarial work. As the wife of a husband that worked for Union Pacific Railroad, Bernice got accustomed to moving around California; from Stockton to Oroville onto Quincy then back to Oroville in 1974. While in Stockton, she began her family of three sons and one daughter. Bernice grew up on a farm in Manteca California where her love of farming, gardening, canning, woodcutting and being an outdoors woman came from. Bernice & Carl enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling in their 5th wheel. She spent her time reading, crocheting, sewing and putting puzzles together when she wasn’t volunteering with the Veterans of Foreign War, American Vets, Altar Society, Catholic Lady Relief Society, Sacristan, Eucharistic Minister, Girls State and PASSAGES Foster Grandparents Program. Her heart and passion of her final years was volunteering and working for her St. Thomas Catholic Church family. Bernice will be missed by ALL of her family.

Great Grandchildren: Jarrett Hughes, Shawn Hughes, Austin Williams, Corinne Hughes, Natalie Hughes, Nolan Hughes, Tatum Hughes, Reid Hughes, McKenna Massey, Logan Pliego, Eli Lundgreen, Rosalie Massey, Rylee Lundgreen & Madison Bryant. Bernice was preceeded in death by her widow Hugh Carl Hughes Jr., along with her son Douglas Hughes. Parents Joseph Silveira & Elvira Avila Gomes, Siblings; Ernest Gomes, Helen Gomes Paulo, Adeline Gomes Paulo, Anna Gomes Wade, Joseph Silveira Gomes Jr., Irene Gomes Toste, Raymond Gomes, Frank Gomes, Philip Gomes, Gabriel Gomes and Louis Gomes.
Her Farewell Services… A visitation will be held at Oroville Funeral Home on Wed. May 10, 2017 starting at 5:00 pm followed by a Rosary at 7:00 pm. Her Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Oroville on Thurs., May 11, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Burial Commitment will be held at East Lawn Cemetery in Quincy California on Fri. May 12, 2017 at 1:00 pm.
The family request contributions can be made to St. Thomas the Apostle School, Oroville California in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are entrusted to Oroville Funeral Home.
