Obituary of Marie Elizabeth Herina

Marie Elizabeth Herina July 2, 1918 ~ May 18, 2016 "The tongue is mightier than the sword." Her Legacy…Marie E. (Pinnix) Herina, Army Wife and devoted mother, left this mortal coil at age 97 and is reunited with husband John and children Patti and Jeff. Her keen intellect and unconquerable spirit were eclipsed only by her fierce loyalty to God, Country and Family. Born in Philadelphia PA to a family with a military tradition dating to the American Revolution, she was a gifted student in arts and humanities at Roselle Park (NJ) High School and Union Junior College. She aspired to attend Columbia University, but like many women of her generation, sacrificed personal ambition to serve her country as a defense worker during WWII, and then support her Army officer-husband's military and teaching careers. With husband often gone, Marie raised her seven children in perilous times overseas during the Berlin Airlift, in the deep South during the integration of the Army, and at Beale AFB during the Great Flood of 1955-56. But most courageous was her decision to provide in-home care for her autistic son Jeff, into her 80's. She also served as President of the Bird Street School PTA and Butte County Association for Retarded Citizens. To her children, she was the place they first came from: their first home. She was the map they followed with every step they took. Hence, nothing can separate them: not time, not space, not even death. Her Family…Survivors include daughters Miki Morgan Boden and Kathy Karthauser; sons Chris, John Marc and Kevin; and 37 grand- and great-grandchildren. Those wishing to honor Mrs. Herina should contribute to Army Emergency Relief, www.aerhq.org. Her Farewell…A celebration of the lives of Marie Elizabeth Herina and her son Jeffrey Lee Herina will take place on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016 at St Thomas Catholic Church, Oroville California at 11:00 a.m..
