Obituary of Avis Childers Cowan

Avis Childers Cowan, 95, was born on November 27, 1922 and passed quietly away on April 6, 2018 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers.

Avis spent her early years in Texas before moving to California at the age of 12. She was the first in her family to go to college, attending Sacramento Junior College then graduating from Chico State in the early 1940s. Avis married John B. Cowan on June 3, 1945, and moved to Gridley in 1947. They were married 63 years until his passing in 2008. Avis obtained her librarian credential while also being a substitute teacher. She served as the Gridley High School Librarian for nearly 20 years, retiring in 1980. John and Avis traveled extensively, especially enjoying their trips to China, Russia, Australia and New Zealand. AAUW, Friends of the Library, Pink Ladies, Women’s Club, and Campfire Girls were some of the organizations with which Avis was involved. She and John were long-time members of the Gridley Presbyterian Church. They also received the honor of “Couple of the Year” from the Gridley Chamber of Commerce for their service to the community.

She is survived by her children: Dan Cowan, John B. Cowan Jr, Janet Cowan and Becky Cowan Johnson. Avis had 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

As per Avis’ request, no public memorial service will be held. Any donations should be made to Gridley Friends of the Library.
